The Wine Seller

Some friends and I went out to eat last night. We went to KC’s Steakhouse first (which I love) but it was really crowded so I suggested we go to The Wine Seller. They had never heard of it. Most people haven’t which is what makes it so great – that and the fact that the food is really, really, REALLY good. It’s on Eye St just down from the Cat and catty-corner to Dagney’s Coffee (which is also one of my favs.) It’s also next to the dive bar Lucky’s and the Statue of Liberty (which I bet you thought was in N.Y.)

The first thing you see when you walk in is the kitchen. Except it’s not really a kitchen, but more of a corner where they set up a little stove. How the chief cooks anything in there I will never know. The inside of the restaurant is very cozy and warm. It feels like you’re in somebody’s living room. There are a couple of couches and all the tables are covered in fleece blankets. There is also a wine bar were people can sit. The walls are covered with interesting pictures, articles, photographs and advertisements. There were maybe around a dozen or so people there and we walked right in and sat where ever we wanted.

Our server was a young girl who was very friendly and bright. She told us about the specials and the featured wines and gave us the menu which was nothing more than a Xeroxed piece of paper. My friends looked at me like I was crazy. “It’s good, I swear!” I told them.

We ended up ordering the bacon wrapped filet with blue cheese, grilled fresh salmon and chicken stir fry. It took quite a while to get our food, but I imagine that's because the chief is basically cooking with a hot plate. As usual the food was beautiful and delicious. Every one of us cleaned our plates and we decided to order the Killer Chocolate Cake for dessert and split it four ways. It was absolutely wonderful. When we were ready to go our server asked us if we wanted to split the bill and then brought it out for us written on a post-it note. Now that’s homey.

In the end my friends thanked me for introducing them to a great new place and I went home and slipped into a coma.

  1. I think I was there a few years ago -- but I don't recall that it had food. Seemed like a great idea but I wasn't sure if it would catch on. Then again, that Ethopian/Southern cooking restaurant did well downtown for a couple years -- and I never would have thought that would have drawn a crowd.
Very glad to hear the wine bar's thriving. What'd you drink?
