Stop the Spraying!
Nearly 40 farm workers were gassed AGAIN today in Arvin while they were trying to work. A fungicide "drifted" over from a nearby field. Twenty of the men became sick and several had to be taken to the hospital. So far the owner of the farm has no comment.
I'm sure the farm workers would have more than a few comments for him.

Party On!
The latest bar review is in the paper today. You can read a summary of it here, but the online version doesn’t have the colorful little icons that quickly tell you whether the place serves a large crowd cheap drinks, or a small group expensive cocktails. I was surprised to only see one bar with the “Smoking” icon this time. I was also surprised by some of the places the authors elected to review. Dock of the Bay, a tiny new place by the freeway was in there, but The Silver Fox was not. Considering the size of crowds I’ve seen at the Fox, I can’t figure out why they didn’t include it.
Several new bars where reviewed, and a I am embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of a couple of them. (I must be getting old.) A new place has opened in the good old cellar bar – formally known as PJ’s Jazz and Blues Club. *sigh* (I like that place.) Now it’s called Club Hpnotiq. *gag*
The new place you’re most likely to find me at is The Nile. I’ve been looking forward to seeing how it looks after the renovations.
Have a great weekend y’all!!

Talking 'bout Bako
It’s interesting how different news agencies portray things that happen in Bakersfield.
The local news titled their articles about the recent accident on Maple Street that killed two children like this*…
KGET – “Military explosive suspected in deadly explosion”
Bakersfield.com – “Two children killed, six others injured in yard explosion”
The out of town news agencies titled their articles like this*…
CNN – “Man gives kids 40 mm shell to play with; 2 killed, 5 hurt”
NBC San Diego– “Neighbor Gave Kids Military Shell That Killed Them”
How do you explain the difference?
(*this is just a sample of the article titles I found.)

Flood Watch
I heard on the news recently that B.P.D. recently revised their evacuation plan, just in case the Isabella Damn ever does break and the city is flooded. Here is the plan.
I don’t know about you, but that two page document doesn’t look like much of plan to me.

Not that kind of a blast.
Something really crazy happened last night not far from my parents' house. A bunch of kids were playing on Myrtle Street when all of the sudden there was an explosion. Two kids died and another four were hurt. The police suspect they were messing around with an old military round when it went off. According to the paper, the blast, “rattled windows and shook floors up and down the street.” Wow. That must have been one big bullet.
The owner of the round said he thought it was safe because the shell casing and gun powder had been removed. He kept it around as a conversation piece. “He said he learned later from the police that there is gunpowder in the gold tip in military rounds.”
My heart goes out to all the families.

Time to Restart
As you probably tell, I’ve been on vacation. I mean, besides going to Italy for two weeks, I spent another couple of weeks doing what ever I darn well felt like. That didn’t include sitting in my office tapping away at a keyboard to create new posts. It did include lying by the pool, shopping, and several long lunches. The good times came to a screeching halt today, however. I went back to work. *sigh*
So, I guess it’s about time for me to get back on the blogging band wagon and start making fun of people again – er, uh, I mean, talking about the news. Lots of good stuff has been going on. Like how Bruce Sons apparently is missing spending time inside a court room, so he’s filing an appeal asking that his voluntary manslaughter conviction thrown out. He wants his rights back. He wants to be able to vote and to carry a gun. Good God. We all know how things turned out last time he had a gun in his hands. Sounds to me what Sons wants is a swift kick in the ass. Why can’t he just leave well enough alone?
I’m sick of even talking about the guy.

By The Way
I appreciate all the positive and/or surprised responses I received from the recent REAL LIFE photos I posted of myself, but I am still going to delete them soon.
So take a good (not so hard) look, cuz that’s the last of me you all will be seeing ‘round here for a while.

Another Update
Paul’s suitcase arrived out of the blue tonight, but I still hate American Airlines.
Their seats suck my butt.

Update
Things have been a little crazy since we got back from Italy. Paul’s suitcase still hasn’t arrived, and it’s starting to look like it may never will. Needless to say, the news is heartbreaking for Paul. We were told we couldn’t take anything on board the plane with us, so everything went into our suitcases, which means all the gifts and souvenirs Paul bought in Italy are gone. I would highly recommend you never fly American Airlines. I firmly believe they totally suck ass. Our return trip home was a total nightmare.
When I wasn’t dealing with lost luggage I was lying around feeling like crap. I came down with a cold after I got home, which is okay because I was in great health during the whole tour of Italy. Now, on top of everything my grandfather died. Except we didn’t call him grandfather, we called him Papa. He was 94 years old and not doing so well, so it wasn’t surprise or anything. I’m just glad it didn’t happen while I was gone. Anyway, the funeral is tomorrow and I’ve been pretty busy helping my mom get ready for the funeral.
So, I apologize for the delay and I promise there will be stories of Italy coming soon.
Until then, here is a picture of Paul receiving a revelation from God.
Proof that my son really is perfect.

When the Moon Hits Your Eye
After taking us out for an amazing meal, our tour director would load our group onto the bus and put this song on. Fat, happy, and slightly drunk all 36 of us would attempt to sing along, much to the amusement of our Italian bus driver, Pino.
Needless to say, I think everyone of us had this song stuck in our heads the whole trip.

Half Here
Paul and I woke up in Rome at 5:00 Monday morning to return to good ol' Bakersfield, which would have made it Sunday evening here. We got home at about 3:30 A.M. Tuesday. Sans luggage, of course. As it stands right now, all the gifts and all the pictures we took in Italy may still very well be in Italy. Although it is equally possible that our stuff has been strewn across the globe with bits of pieces of it landing in Chicago, Dallas, or LA. Either way, we have nothing to show for our two week trip except a couple of heafty bags under our eyes and a duffle bag full of my dirty chonies and Paul's stinky socks.
Stories of our travels to and from Italy my very well have to come before the stories of our travels in Italy.
