Cow Crash

A different kind of animal slaughter happened in Kern County this week. A big rig carrying a load of calves (presumably to be turned into veal) wrecked near Edwards Air Force base, killing 30 baby cows. Several others were euthanized. I’m sure glad I wasn’t traveling behind that truck. That brings a whole new meaning the term ‘road kill.’

I saw a cow run onto to Highway 99 once. I was driving north, and as I approached the California Street exit a cow suddenly jumped over the fence from Oak Street and slid down the ice plant and onto the freeway. Talk about a freaky sight. Cars were swerving all over the place. I looked in my rearview mirror as continued down the road and saw the cow dodging traffic.

I always wondered if that cow survived.
