Welcome to the Punk Show

I went to the Silver Fox Saturday night to see the In Denials and The 28’s. I had not seen either band before, so I had no idea what to expect, but I was very pleasantly surprised. The first surprise was the crowd. There were the expected local punk rockers of course, but there was also a small collection of yuppie looking, preppy dudes, and a whole pack of former West High graduates. It almost looked like a reunion in there. And then there was the one guy who really stood out - Donny the Drunk. (You can find pictures on Dobbler’s Drunk Corner. He’s the one hanging onto his pants to keep them from falling off.)

Donny got the attention of the entire bar when he walked in and began screaming at the top his lungs, “F@*% yeah! Punk rock! Wooooooo! F-you mutha f’ers,” or something to that effect. Everyone turned around wondering what the hell was going on. Was there going to be fight? Apparently Donny sensed the apprehension in the air, so he began to elaborate (again – at the top of his lungs, and all the while trying to hold pants up) that he had walked some a great distance to come to this show and he was very enthusiastic about seeing the bands play. Of course he didn’t use those words, and the whole speech was liberally peppered with the f-word and several rounds of woooooooowwww! In fact, Donny was so excited for the punk show to start he jumped behind the mic and tried to sing a song or two of his own. Unfortunately (or fortunately) he could not remember the words (or should I say, think of any words.)

As entertaining, and somewhat scary, as Donny the Drunk was, he was not nearly as fun to watch, and to listen to as the In Denials and The 28’s. The whole crowd was up and dancing before long. Even the preps were moshing with Donny. A great time was had by all.

Thanks so much to the bands for a great night – y’all kicked ass.
