A friend and I walked downtown last night to see Flics at the Fox. They were playing The Motorcycle Diaries and I really wanted to see it on the big screen. I love going to movies at the Fox. Mostly because it conjures up memories of the good ol’ days when I was a kid and an afternoon in the Fox brought unspeakable delight. Except for, of course, when I was forced to sit under the giant, gold shell hanging over the first few rows of the theater. I was always terrified that sucker would suddenly come crashing down and crush us all. I preferred to sit in the balcony and survey the heavy, red drapes while bouncing on the velvety seats. More than once I found myself swallowed up by my chair, sandwiched between the back and the seat, squealing for help from my sister. Luckily that did not happen last night.
We got to the theater a little late, which we quickly regretted after seeing that they had kicked off the new season with a free wine and cheese reception. We tried to scavenge for scraps before the movie started, but there really wasn’t much left, so I purchased popcorn and a coke and we headed upstairs. Big mistake. It was hotter ‘n hell up there, but my friend is sort of a freak of nature and never seems to notice the temperature, hot, cold, or otherwise, so I suffered in silence.
I was really impressed with the size of the audience. There were still plenty of empty seats, but compared to the crowds I’d seen at previous shows, it was a pretty impressive turn out. (Obviously they knew about the wine and cheese.) I enjoyed the film, although it did seem a bit long (probably because I was quickly becoming dehydrated from my profuse perspiring.)
After the show we caught up with another friend and the three of us headed to the coolest new restaurant in town. (I’ve been meaning to write about it for weeks now, but “things” just keep getting in the way.) The place is called Mama Roomba’s and it’s right next to the Alley Cat in the space that used to be The Cobbler – right on the corner of Wall St. and Eye. The food is South American and features Tapas like “Chilean Style Empanadas” and “Cerviche Peruvian Style.”
I first discovered the place a few weeks ago with a friend after dining at Fishlips. We went in and sat at the bar. I was excited to discover that besides homemade Sangria they also served authentic Mojitos. It was quiet while we were there, so it wasn’t long before we were introduced to the owner and I am a terrible human being because I can not remember his name for the life of me. I do remember that he is very handsome and that he told us he came to
A couple of weeks later some friends and I decided to try the place out and met for dinner at
My friends and I decided to sample and share the Tapas rather than order an entrée. We choose the Empanadas Don Hugo, Calamari Frito, “Soul Style” Skillet Shrimp, Cerviche, “Chickin Paillard,” a warm spinach salad, and a side of plantain chips. All the food was good, some better than others, but over all we were all pleased. The biggest disappointment was the size of the portions, but I suspect this has to do more to being over fed Americans than it does with insufficient servings. Overall we enjoyed the experience, which is why we returned yesterday after the film. We arrived late, it was almost
I’m excited about this new restaurant downtown and strongly suggest that if you have any interest in bringing more diverse dining experiences to this town, that you check out Mama Roomba’s soon and often. Bon Appetite!
Oh yeah - and help support the Fox by attending Friday Night Flics at the Fox. You can find the schedule here.
