This has turned out to be an unusual year for me. I’ve done some traveling in the past, but lately it seems like I don’t get out of town much. Not anymore.
Next week I’m going to Vegas to visit Flo for a few days. Then I’m going to St. George, Utah to visit my Mormon friend. (Everybody should have at least one.) Four weeks later Paul and I leave for Italy. WOO HOO! And now I have even more travel plans. I just bought a ticket to the Austin Music Festival. My friend DD and I are flying out to Texas to go see a butt load of great bands. Pretty cool, huh? (Thanks to boudin for the brilliant idea.)
I just may have to start a travel blog.

Lerdo Leaks
Three more inmates escaped from Lerdo recently. That makes six escapees in six days. The dudes still in there have got to be feeling pretty stupid that they’re still there at this point.
One man, Cory Garret, has already been caught. Garret escaped last week, but was captured yesterday after running from the scene of a crime. According to the paper, Garret kicked a police dog during the scuffle and knocked it unconscious. For Garret’s sake I hope the cops don’t do the same thing to him. (Not really.)
Good Ol’ Boy Sheriff Mack Wimbish says all the recent escapes are no big deal and harkens back to a time when they happened on a daily basis. Yeah, that makes me feel better. Sgt Richard Wood acknowledged that recent “bad budgets” has caused the staff to be shorthanded. He also attempted to reassure the public that the inmates held at Lerdo are not a threat to the public. All the inmates that escaped were there for burglary, drugs and/or weapons charges.
Somehow that doesn’t make me feel any better about it. Burglars on drugs carrying weapons sounds pretty threatening to me.

No Worries!
The Army Corps Engineers, who told us all recently that the breaking of the Isabella Dam was the biggest threat in the country, announced yesterday that the threat was gone. The Corps handed operation of the dam back over to the city of Bakersfield saying, “We’re over the hump.”
Excuse me, but that dam is fifty years old and built on top of a fault line. This area is historically known to flood. I don’t care if the snowmelt has slowed down; it’s hard for me to believe the danger of flooding has suddenly disappeared.
Maybe the heat will go away too.

I'm sorry, I just can't help myself. I am enthralled by the cuteness of my baby tortoise. Perhaps it is testament to the dullness of my life, but I can sit and watch him for hours.
Then again, so can my cat.
I bet he's thinking, "What are you looking at?"
He can do the splits and a double back flip.
Sherman found a great way to take a load off.
Sherm's *yawn* exhausted from a long day.
Have you ever seen a more perfect shell?
Sherm's a total hippie.

Monster Sucks
There’s a big ol’ article on the front page of the paper today all about those big ol’ monster trucks I keep seeing all over town. The article explains that the trucks are dangerous, frequently illegal, and very expensive. Kent Porter, owner of Krazy Kustomz, admits that, “On a real big truck, it’s hard to see cars next to you or behind you” and “Sometimes you can’t even see cars in front of you…” That’s great. I feel real safe sharing the road with someone who can’t see anything. Personally I don’t see the appeal of these trucks. They waste gas and pose a threat to other vehicles. As far as I’m concerned they just look dumb.
It’s kind of hard to look cool when you’re struggling to get into your own truck.

It's got to get better than this. Please God!
I woke up 5:00 A.M. today. I prefer to wake up early in the summer so I can water my plants in relative comfort. When I went outside it was about 70°. The expected high for today is somewhere around 106°. The air quality is unhealthy and residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid moving if possible.
After watering and watching some news, I went to bakersfield.com to see if anybody has been shot or whatever and I saw one of the most nonsensical sentences I have ever seen… “Gandhi baseball movie filmed at Sam Lynn.” (Huh??) But before I clicked on the link to read it I saw another article titled, “Officials to consider adopting new logo for city,” so I decided to read that article first since I couldn't wrap my head around the idea that there’s a “Gandhi baseball movie filmed at Sam Lynn.”
Photo totally stolen from bakersfield.com and taken by Kameran Kashani.
(nice work) (Oh yeah... that's a bat he's holding, not, you know, somthing else.
Sorry - but it had to be said.)
Evidently there’s been some disagreement over which slogan best represents the city of Bakersfield. Some people do not like the so called “Bakersfield Squiggle” as seen here...
I, for one, do not mind the squiggle. First of all I like the word squiggle and second of all it’s a freakin squiggle, what’s not to like? It’s pretty simple and kinda meaningless - just like Bakersfield. It works for me. (I do not, however, like the ugly city signs they made in brown and red with the squiggle.)
Anyway, some people are pushing for a new city logo. Something more meaningful and clear. Something spelled out in small words. These people are hoping to adopt this as our new city logo...
Now, I’d have nothing against the whole “Bakersfield, Life as it Should Be” movement if it weren’t for the fact that it is TOTAL B.S!!! If unbearable heat, unbreathable air, and a population full of overwhelming idiots is “life as it should be,” then I think we need to collectively jump in the river. I don’t give a crap if the ‘I’ is dotted with a nice little leaf and it looks cute. Most people in this town don’t give a crap about trees and leaves and the environment. If they did they’d start recycling, stop littering, and quit driving around in those giant gas gusslers.
What do y'all think? Which logo do you prefer?

A Very Merry UnBirthday to Me!!
The famous bridge to nowhere. (Again)
I received a little fan email today. It doesn’t happen often, but periodically I’ll get an email from a complete stranger saying they dig something about my blog. That’s pretty cool. Especially when, like today, I look at my blog and see like a bajillion typos and I’m totally mortified that such slop has been out there posted for the whole world to see. (Work with me here people!! I’m in desperate need of an editor.) When I first started I wrote a lot about Bako history cuz I didn't know what else to write about and I've always liked history. I was a virtual Vivian Tucker, if you will - but with attitude! Apparently some people wish I would stick to the history....
Anyway, I realized that my 2 year anniversary is coming up soon but, alas, I will be unable to celebrate it because I will be too busy getting my swerve on in
For those of you who don’t know, Bake Town is an affectionate euphemism for Bakersfield, CA, hometown to nearly 300,000 hearty souls. Due to the large number of “okies”, oil field workers, cowboys, AND the perilously hot summer temperatures, Bakersfield has suffered for decades with what can best be described as a “poor image.” More precisely, Bakersfield is California’s whipping boy. I am on a personal crusade to change all that. I am going to give Bakersfieldians the self-esteem to stand up and defend our fair city against the cynics. We WILL take pride in who we are and where we live.
How I plan to do this I have no idea.

I don't get it.
Did y'all hear the story about the man who hid under a woman's bed for TWO DAYS!! How does someone do that?? How you go TWO DAYS under a bed with out pooping, or peeping, or farting, or burbing, or eating, or drinking, or SOMETHING!!
That's crazy.

Paul said...
So I was reading the article to Paul about Danny Butterbredt and when I finished he said, “That just sounds unpleasant. I mean if there are two words you never want to hear in the same sentence it’s ‘flesh-eating’ and ‘genitals.’ There’s not even a word to describe how awful that sounds. Except maybe terrorizing.”
Then he said ‘genitals’ is funny sounding word.

That's Gotta Hurt
Tehachapi resident Danny Butterbredt is not doing so good. He checked himself into KMC recently for pains in his side. It turns out a “Flesh-eating staph infection….had killed a lot of the muscle tissue on Butterbredt’s left side and had spread to his genitals and then back up to his shoulder.” Yikes! Poor guy. The 24 year old was transferred recently to Stanford University Medical Center for treatment.
The family has set up an account to accept donations for his medical costs and to help care for his son and girlfriend. Email me if you are interested in the information.

News Nips
The police arrested Dr. Nadjmabadi this week and charged him with three counts of sexual battery and one count of “sexual penetration with a foreign object.” (ew!) Patients have been coming forward ever since it was first announced that he was under investigation. Some have said they don’t believe it and others have said they do.
Either way I’d say that dude can kiss his career in this town good bye.
---------------
The man I was making fun of yesterday for jumping into the Kern River somehow made it out alive. Andrew Hernandez called his family Wednesday morning to let them know he was okay. (That was nice of him.) Police are still looking for him, however, since he does have an active warrant out for his arrest.
I guess this means he is no longer eligible for the Darwin Award.
--------------
Jason Armendariz, the teenager who beat Jason Sutton to death with a padlocked chain, received six years in prison for the crime. He plead no contest to voluntary manslaughter. I don’t know much about this case and there hasn’t been a lot of information in news, but it seems sad and strange to me that a man was brutally beaten to death and the person who did only got 6 years. How many will he actually serve? Four maybe?
Sounds like he got away with murder.
----------------
Two inmates escaped from Lerdo yesterday morning. The news says, “Both inmates were able to get past the fences at the facility and escape towards the North West.” How do they know that? If they saw them escaping towards the North West why didn’t they do something about?
Neither of the men were going to be in Lerdo for very long so it seems stupid to me that they try and escape. I’m sure jail is bad, but Lerdo ain’t nothing compared to a real prison.
